Many people have been stressing that they’d like to be able to lock their children out of certain addons, specifically ones that are adult in nature. While XBMC doesn’t currently support Parental Control, there is a new program addon that will allow you to Password Protect specific addons that you’ve installed. This doesn’t seem to work with all addons yet, keep that in mind.
ADDING PASSWORD PROTECTION TO XBMC ADDONS FOR PURPOSES OF PARENTAL CONTROL
Requirements
- XBMC Parental Control Program Addon (can be installed through Fusion Installer using the guide below)
Step 1: Launch XBMC, and Navigate to the “SYSTEM” menu.

Step 2: Click on the “Add-ons” menu on the side.

Step 3: Choose the “Install from zip file” function.

Step 4: Select the “fusion” server folder. Skip this step and the next if you’re installing using conventional upload method instead of Fusion Installer.

Step 5: Navigate to the “xpert-advanced” folder.

Step 6: Select the “script.video.parentalcontrols-1.4.10.zip” file from the list.

Step 7: Go back to the main menu and open the “PROGRAMS” menu.

Step 8: Launch the “Parental Controls” program addon.

Step 9: Choose a passcode when prompted, you can use any variation of arrow directions.

Step 10: Confirm your chosen passcode.

Step 11: You’ll now be displayed a list of installed addons.

Step 12: Click on the addon that you wish to protect. We’re going to use “Veetle” as an example.

Step 13: Close the settings window and return to the main menu.

Step 14: Go to the “Add-ons” menu under the “VIDEOS” heading.

Step 15: Open the “Veetle” video addon.

Step 16: It will show that all the content is blocked because specific ratings aren’t available for videos in this addon, click on the line that says “Blocked” to proceed.

Step 17: Enter your chosen passcode when prompted to unlock the content.

Step 18: Enjoy the plugin as usual.

Congratulations! Now you won’t have to experience the awkward moment of explaining to your children about what they saw on the television tonight. Please note that in our tests it did not work with all plugins so tread with caution.

Thanks for the nice writeup on my addon. Since you did not include it in your article, here’s a link to the addon’s home page: http://killdash9.github.com/xbmc-parental-controls/
I am interested in making improvements to it as I have time. I would be interested to know which plugins did not work with the parental controls addon.
Thanks!
Videodevil, the adult addon, seems to have broke when trying to Protect it, it just gives an error when you try to use it after. Great work so far though!
Team XBMC HUB,
Thanks for alerting me of this issue. There were a whole class of video addons that were broken by this same bug. You will find the issue has been fixed in 1.4.11. Please update your zip file to the latest version.
Currently my addon will protect playback but will still allow browse for videodevil. It might be more appropriate for an adult addon to be protected at the top level.
There are lots of great new features in 1.5.3 including more aggressive protection for specifically adult addons (those in the xbmc-adult repo), Automatic updates will now work without needing a restart, and there are performance improvements and bug fixes as well.
